Bhoomi

“Bhoomi” (2021) is an action drama movie directed by and written by Lakshman, produced by Sujatha Vijayakumar under the names Home Movie Makers and Yarco Entertainment. Ravi Mohan, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Ronit Roy play lead roles. The plot is about Bhoominathan, a NASA scientist, whose Mars mission is disrupted by a struggle for justice at home.

Bhoominathan (Ravi Mohan), the award-winning scientist, finds that plants can survive on Mars when subjected to a precise anaerobic environment. On his way to Mars for the trip, he goes back to his village in Tamil Nadu to spend a brief vacation. He is appalled to see his village destroyed by a harsh drought, fueled by corporations draining groundwater for profits. His favorite uncle, who was a farmer and fiercely resisted the exploitation, ultimately commits suicide after being subjected to an endless sea of bureaucratic and political apathy.

Bhoominathan is heartbroken and resolves to topple Richard Child, the merciless CEO who has led the destruction of the environment. The corporation's wealth and might, however, stifle Bhoomi's attempts through the law. Determined, he goes against the trend by rallying the locals and starting 'Thamizhan,' a cooperative farm to restore their lands. Bhoomi applies his scientific expertise in hybrid farming, overcoming numerous odds, including sabotage by corporate forces. With persistence and resourcefulness, he can reclaim water sources and revive agriculture in the parched land. Last but not least, Bhoominathan takes down Richard Child and secures a better future for his people.

“Bhoomi” is an inspiring movie with noble intentions to promote the importance of agriculture, self-sufficiency, and sustainability. Ravi Mohan's genuine performance keeps the movie going, but formulaic scripting, exaggerated villainy, and convenient emotional spills disallow it from leaving any lasting impression. Despite all its flaws, it is a good-hearted but haphazard social entertainer.
