“Boat” is a Tamil survival drama movie written and directed by Chimbu Deven. Starring Yogi Babu, Gouri G. Krishan, M. S. Bhaskar, and Chinni Jayath, the movie is about ten strangers embarking on a perilous voyage to flee war-torn Madras in 1943.

While Japanese bombs fill the sky above the city, a multicultural community sets sail upon a small ship, seeking to escape the terror on the waters. There's a father and daughter, a pregnant woman with her son, and a troubled man who stands accused of revolution. They share different histories but now are all tied together through the same crisis: survival at sea.

Their adventure soon becomes perilous. The vessel is at risk of overturning, provisions are running low, and hiding in the ocean is a voracious shark. Contrasts accumulate as the guests fight with their choices and beliefs. There are the desperate, there are the hopeful, and there are the downright dishonest. With time, they realize that escaping the city was merely the beginning of their hell.

Although the setup is promising a survival thriller, the follow-through does not hold. The characters, although having interesting backstories, are also mostly exaggerated and not realistic. There is forced comedy introduced as well, which undermines the somber mood and creates unintentional laughs at certain moments. The Tamil-speaking British officers and the revolutionary character are shown in a formulaic, two-dimensional fashion.

Adding to the mismatch, Ghibran's score sounds misplaced and does not elevate the tension level. The film tries to balance history, adventure, and survival, but due to the paucity of emotional depth and uneven pacing, it does not leave a memorable impression.

Subpar as it is, “Boat” has a contrasting backdrop and interesting premise. It is a take on wartime oceanic struggles differently for those watching historical survival drama.
