June R

"June R" is a 2006 Kollywood indie drama directed by actress-turned-filmmaker Revathy S. Varmha. It features Jyothika, Khushbu Sundar and Saritha in lead roles. Creator Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells) tells the story of June, who adopts and nurtures an elderly, abandoned woman who requires her care and love.

June R, an orphan who was named after the month she was born, is now employed as a copywriter at an ad agency. One day she discovers that a middle-aged woman injured in a hit-and-run accident, admitting the injured woman to her own hospital, claiming that the woman, Rajalakshmi, is her own mother to save Rajalakshmi’s life. In truth, Rajalakshmi is Raniammal, a real-life widow who sacrificed everything for her son Arun. Arun and his wife would send Raniammal to an old age home while they would migrate to New York, leaving her behind. As June and Raniammal grow closer, they provide each other with love and care, standing in for the absence of motherly nurturing and daughterly devotion in their lives. When Arun comes back to take Raniammal home, she won’t go, and the ensuing clash between June and Arun is the crux of the film. While June’s arrival allows Raniammal to be nursed back to health, it’ll take the reunion of June with her brother to reveal the secret origin of Arun’s newfound interest in his mother.

With support from Amudha, a public interest attorney, June engages in a lengthy legal battle to prevent Raniammal from being forcibly returned to India. The court rules in favour of June; destiny strikes as June finds out that Raniammal has died. Through her grief, June finds comfort in Raja, a wealthy, widowed client who loves and takes care of her, realising Raniammal’s dream of June’s happiness.
