Kaali (1980) is an action drama by director I. V. Sasi. It features Rajinikanth, Vijayakumar, Seema, Fatafat Jayalaxmi and Kaikala Satyanarayana. The film centres on Kaali, a skilled mechanic haunted by the mysterious death of his family. As he uncovers the ugly truths behind the tragedy. Kaali fights dangerous foes and his troubled mind in a search for the truth.
Kaali is a working mechanic who is living a decent life with his wife Anitha and daughter until a powerful businessman by the name of Rajaram wants to take their land to build a factory. Kaali refuses to sell the land to Rajaram, who employs violence and other methods to strong-arm Kaali into submission. An accident attributable to Rajaram's men has resulted in the deaths of Kaali's wife and daughter and left Kaali badly hurt. In terrible pain and suffering, Kaali embarks on his path of retaliation. He moves to the city and gets work undercover in Rajaram's factory so that he can remain one of many employees working there.
Gradually, Kaali secretly builds up evidence of Rajaram's illegal activities, mostly around cheating workers and harming the environment. With the help of his loyal friend Sokku and an activist named Alangaram, Kaali exposes Rajaram and his crimes to the public domain. Rajaram tries to stop them by sending his goons after Kaali, which leads to thrilling fights. Kaali exhibits bravery and cleverness to prevail. In the end, the police arrest Rajaram and justice is served. Kaali can then leave, having avenged his family's death and safe in the knowledge that he has defended the village. He goes home to rebuild his life with renewed hope and strength.
Kaali is a whirlwind of action scenes that are punctuated by emotional landings, all driven by a mesmerising performance from Rajinikanth. The film was produced in both Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. The music by Ilaiyaraaja helps establish the mood, while often complementing the dramatic tension of the story. Even though it was criticised for having lots of violence, Kaali is still a film to remember for its gritty feel and the lead character's quest for justice.
