Sattam Oru Vilaiyattu is a S.A. Chandrasekhar’s 1987 vigilante action film. Features Vijayakanth, Radha and Ravinchandran. The movie tells the story of Raja, a man who has been traumatised by the gory murder of his family, and goes on to avenge their deaths by killing the criminal behind their murders. Under this new guise, he tracks down the killer’s sons one by one, cut short by the same brutalisation they perpetrated on their father, needing to feel justice served more than anything else.
As a young boy, Raja (Vijayakanth) sees the vicious slaughter of his mother (Srividya) and baby brother. In the meantime, he watches his father, DCP Needhi Manikkam (Ravichandran), impotently fail to punish the killer, Mathappu Sundaram (Senthamarai), because of a lack of evidence. This trauma becomes the pedestal of Raja’s life, and as he grows up, he is cast as a short-tempered man filled with anger and revenge within. Young Raja, as played by Vijay in the movie’s first half, offers a compelling glimpse of his emotional turmoil and agony.
Years later, now living in the assumed identity of Vijay, Raja slowly gets his revenge by going after Mathappu Sundaram’s three sons. He carefully plans each murder, drowning one child in a pool, throwing another off a mountain, and setting the third up to die in a car wreck. Every new act feels cold and calculated, showing how thoroughly the past has scarred him. Against this backdrop of a full vengeance head-on-a-collision-course-to-their-murder direction, characters such as Veni (Radha), Vairavelu (S. S. Chandran), Lingesan (Senthil), and Peter (S. A. Chandrasekhar) bring in added dimensions of love, anchoring, and character drama. If one doesn’t deal with pain from the past, revenge can drive you down a deadly road. The drama leaves viewers wondering if revenge brings about peace or only more pain.
Sattam Oru Vilaiyattu is a thrilling vigilante action movie with a probing heart, revealing the psychological burden of loss, justice and revenge. Having a deep emotional heart, the film is nonetheless chock-full of action, and it’s this twin presence of clear narrative shape and dramatic urgency that makes the film such a compelling ride. Bolstered by unforgettable performances and a chilling mood, it delves into the effects of unhealed trauma and asks if revenge can ever truly restore a broken spirit.
