For filmmaker, actor and storyteller Sudhanshu Rai, the camera is far more than a technical instrument used to capture images. It is a powerful storytelling medium that allows a filmmaker to shape how an audience sees, understands and emotionally connects with a story.

Sharing his perspective on the art of filmmaking and photography, Rai explains that every decision made through the camera plays a crucial role in creating the cinematic experience. From capturing a character’s smallest expression to establishing the atmosphere, surroundings and environment, the camera determines what the audience notices and how deeply they connect with a particular moment.

According to Rai, framing is one of the most important aspects of this visual language. The choice of composition can establish depth, create intimacy and influence the exact emotion that a scene is intended to evoke. A carefully positioned camera can make an audience feel closer to a character, immerse them in a fictional world or allow them to observe a moment from a specific perspective.

Rai believes that filmmaking is ultimately about inviting viewers into a world that exists first in the filmmaker’s imagination. Every time a filmmaker looks through the camera, they are making a conscious choice about how that imagined world should be presented to the audience.

“For a filmmaker, the camera is not merely a tool to create a moment; it is a way of deciding how the audience will experience a world,” says Rai.

He further emphasises that photography and cinematography have the unique ability to make audiences not only see a story but also feel and experience it. Through framing, perspective, ambience and visual details, a filmmaker can guide emotions without relying solely on dialogue.

For Rai, this is the true power of the camera in filmmaking — transforming imagination into a visual experience and allowing audiences to enter, connect with and experience a story exactly as its creator envisioned it.
